Answers
- Is it expensive to study abroad?
That depends. Studying abroad can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you make it. The single biggest factor is usually how much independent travel you do on weekends and breaks. In the past, the cost of CES programs varied with the least expensive starting at approximately $3,700 and the most expensive costing no more than $4,500 (depending on what is included in the program fee). The continuous weakening of the dollar vis-à-vis the euro is not the most encouraging news, but we hope to still offer affordable programs for our students.
- Does financial aid apply?
Yes. University of Florida students needing financial aid should apply through UF Student Financial Affairs (SFA). Non-UF students needing financial aid must apply to their home institutions.
- Are scholarships available for studying abroad?
Yes. Partial scholarships for UF students are available on a competitive basis through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Honors program, as well as the International Center and the Center for European Studies. The CES usually offers $500 scholarship per each program.
- Will my classes transfer back to UF?
Yes. All CES programs are UF sponsored programs. Credits from courses taken can satisfy major, minor, elective and university requirements. UF GPA credit will be granted for the courses taken with UF faculty. Transfer credit will be earned for any courses taught by local instructors.
- If I study abroad will I still graduate on time?
You should. We work hard to make sure that taking part in one of our programs will not delay your graduation. With reasonable planning, any UF student can have a great international experience and still graduate on time.
- Am I academically eligible to study abroad?
Students are considered academically eligible to study abroad on CES-sponsored programs if their GPA is at least 2.75. Students must submit two letters of recommendation, an essay, and recent transcript.
- Do I have to speak a foreign language to study abroad?
Not really. All of our programs allow you to take courses in English. However, all of our programs offer students the opportunity to take language courses in Polish, Czech, French/Flemish, and German, respectively.
- How long can I study abroad?
All of CES-sponsored programs are offered in summers and last for six weeks. Note that you can participate in Salzburg (Summer A) and Kraków or Prague (Summer B) programs in one Summer and extend your study abroad experience!
- Where will I live?
Housing options vary by program. Brussels students stay in shared apartments, Kraków/Wrocław and Prague students are housed in dormitories, and Salzburg students enjoy the perks of home stays with Austrian families (breakfast and dinners included; free of charge laundry services).
- Do my courses count for the European Union/East Central European minor?
Absolutely! All CES programs are automatically counted towards the fulfillment of the capstone requirements of the EUSP minor degree and programs in Kraków/Wrocław, Prague, and Salzburg offer courses that are part of the ECES curriculum.
