PROGRAM DATES : Summer B 2008

UF in Poland is a six-week program that offers students a unique opportunity to study in two of Poland’s most culturally and historically renowned cities: Kraków and Wrocław. Students will spend four weeks in Kraków studying Polish language and culture at Jagiellonian University (JU). They will also meet for an interdisciplinary humanities seminar taught by UF faculty that begins in Kraków and then moves north-west to Wrocław for the final two weeks of the program. The course will incorporate literature, history, architecture, film and art.

In 2006, Kraków was selected as one of the five best cities in Europe by Travel & Leisure magazine. Located in southern Poland, not far from the Tatra Mountains, Kraków is the capital of the Małopolska province. A medieval city with a contemporary flare, Kraków and its outlying area is home to over a million Poles and annually welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. The capital of Poland for almost 500 years, Kraków boasts one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe and unlocks a time-capsule of over 600 years of history, architecture and art. At the same time, hundreds of street cafes, concert venues, cabarets, film houses, shops, and museums make Kraków a gateway to understanding Poland today. Home to over 18 universities and numerous scientific, administrative, and financial institutions, Kraków is the economic center of the region.
With so many universities, it is also a city of the young and well educated— a perfect environment to learn about Poland yesterday and today.
Wrocław, the capital of the Lower Silesian province, is called the “Polish Venice.” It is a city of islands and bridges located at the geographic and commercial crossroads of Europe. Wrocław’s status as a major urban center of no less than nine European states or empires over the past 1000 years has left a rich legacy of architecture, history, and culture in the city. Its architectural mysteries in particular have made it a favorite feature film location for both Polish and international directors. And with over 12 universities or institutions of higher education, as well as one of Poland’s largest and most attractive town squares, Wrocław enjoys a thriving arts life and a vibrant youth culture. Wrocław is definitely one of the “undiscovered treasures” of the new Europe.
