The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) calls for applications for two positions of full-time doctoral researchers for two new research projects in the areas of European Foreign and Security Policy and Information Society as they relate to European Studies.

Research projects need to be in line with the IES research strategy that focuses on the EU as an international actor.

Postdoctoral research position in the field of Migration, Diversity and Human Rights (The Institute for European Studies, VUB)

The Institute for European Studies (IES) invites applications for one full-time postdoctoral researcher on Migration, Diversity and Human Rights for a duration of two years (renewable). The IES is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) specialising in European Studies. Its research focuses on the role of the EU as a global actor and on the interaction between the internal and external dimensions of EU policies and between EU policies and other international institutions and organisations.

Within the overall research strategy of the IES, the successful candidate will conduct research related to the IES research cluster on migration and diversity and contribute to the further development of this research cluster under the guidance of IES Senior Research Fellow Richard Lewis and IES management.

Positions can be held preferably on a full-time or substantial part-time basis. Secondment from other Belgian or foreign universities can be envisaged.

A. Faculty Development Seminar - "Germany and Poland - A Troubled Partnership in a 'Deepening European Union'" (June 2008 - Berlin, Krakow)

From 19 June to 1 July of 2008, STUDIENFORUM BERLIN will organize a faculty development seminar on "Germany and Poland - A Troubled Partnership in a 'Deepening' European Union", to take place in Berlin and Krakow. Gliwice and Auschwitz will be visited as well.

The seminar will discuss (1) the dimensions of the bilateral problems:  history, political and economic relations, perceptions, misperceptions and claims, the role of the German minority in Poland and the role of Poles living in Germany, etc. It will examine (2) the impact of the bilateral relationship on the future of the integration process in Europe will be, whether, for instance, Poland’s insistence on a greater role may further tendencies already existing towards a “core European Union” or a “Europe of several speeds”.  Finally, the seminar will look (3) at the respective relations with the United States and at the question what their repercussions may be for the future of the Polish-German relationship and the future of the EU.

B. Visiting Faculty Fellowships

The University of Connecticut Humanities Institute (UCHI) invites outstanding university and college professors, independent scholars, writers, museum and library professionals to apply for a residential fellowship that comes with a stipend of $40,000. Successful candidates will devote an academic year at the Storrs Campus of the University of Connecticut to research and writing, discussion and scholarly collaboration with other UCHI fellows.

The Future of the EU: Addressing the Challenges of Governance, Globalization and Multiculturalism - Saturday, March 1, 2008 at University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

The European Union is currently facing many challenges that affect its citizens, institutions and policy-making capability. This conference wishes to highlight graduate student research that addresses some of these broad challenges. The Organizing Committee of the 3rd Annual Graduate Student Conference on the European Union welcomes papers addressing the theme of the conference. We seek submissions from all disciplines on topics including, but not limited to, European Union politics, economics and institutions; and policies including enlargement, immigration, development, trade, transatlantic relations and foreign policy more generally.

D. The National Endowment for the Humanities - Invitation for Workshops proposals

The National Endowment for the Humanities invites proposals for workshops that offer academically rigorous professional development programs for K-12 educators seeking to use digital resources to strengthen the teaching of the humanities. Workshops should be designed to offer a minimum of four full days of instruction, or the equivalent amount of hours spread over a longer period of time. Projects should feature humanities scholars who have expertise relevant to the workshop topic and appropriate experience in the use of new technologies in their teaching. Faculty for the workshop must be identified in the proposal, with evidence of commitments included in the application.

Projects serving 20 or more teachers from a single institution are eligible for funding up to $30,000. Projects serving a cluster of institutions and a larger number of teachers are eligible for funding up to $100,000. These larger projects also should explore distance education delivery through video, web-conferencing, and/or digital platforms. Funds may be used to pay for visiting scholars, books and other materials, logistical support, and appropriate release time for project staff. Participants who complete the workshop will receive a stipend. The grant period may run between twelve and eighteen months, depending on the project.

E. Ernst B. Haas Fund Fellowship

The 2007-2009 EUSA Executive Committee is pleased to announce the 2008 EUSA Haas Fund Fellowship Competition, an annual fellowship for graduate student EU-related dissertation research.

Please note the following stipulations for applicants, who must:

  • Be pursuing the doctoral degree (PhD) at an accredited institution in any country

  • Be writing a dissertation in English

  • Have an EU-related, doctoral dissertation topic approved by the professor who will supervise it

  • Be able to demonstrate clearly the relevance to EU studies of the dissertation topic.

The firm deadline for applications to be received in the EUSA office is January 18, 2008. The successful applicant will be notified by April 1, 2008, at the latest, and will receive the grant as soon as the fellowship award letter has been signed and returned to EUSA. The fellowship will be paid in one lump sum by check only and in US$ only.

G. MPIfG Postdoctoral Fellowships -- Call for Applications

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne is offering several postdoctoral fellowships in economic sociology and political economy.  The fellowships will start in October 2008 and will be awarded for one year. The program is open to researchers from a variety of social science disciplines, in particular but not exclusively sociology and political science.

H.The Harry Ransom Center 2008-2009 Research Fellowships

The Harry Ransom Center, one of the world`s foremost institutions for research in literature and the arts, announces its 2008-2009 Research Fellowship Program.

Approximately 50 fellowships are awarded annually by the Ransom Center to support scholarly research projects in all areas of the humanities. Priority, however, will be given to those proposals that concentrate on the Center`s collections and that require substantial on-site use of them.

A number of fellowships in this year`s competition will be dedicated to proposals which focus on integrating and finding points of convergence between the literary and visual collections housed at the Ransom Center.

Fellowships of from one to 4 months are available with a monthly stipend of up to $3,000 per month. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2008.

The Middlebury College summer Language Schools is pleased to announce the Kathryn Davis Fellowships: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages. These fellowships, endowed by Kathryn Davis, fund the cost of tuition, room, board, and a travel stipend for individuals to study in the Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese or Russian Schools at Middlebury College for the summer of 2008.
