ACADEMIC YEAR TITLE VI FLAS FELLOWSHIPS

The University of Florida's Center for European Studies awards annual Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, funded by the US Department of Education (USDOE) under Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

Fellowships are awarded to students combining graduate work in an academic discipline with European area and language studies. Fellowships are offered for any one of the lesser and least commonly taught European languages (Czech, Hungarian, Italian, Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish). In exceptional cases funding may also be available to support advanced language training in French, German or Spanish. If you would like to apply for a FLAS to study European language not listed above, please contact the CES FLAS Coordinator, Dr. Petia Kostadinova at petiak@ces.ufl.edu.

Applications will be accepted for pursuit of a graduate degree in any UF department. The Center recommends that fellowship recipients also work toward fulfilling the requirements for a Certificate in European Area Studies in conjunction with their specific graduate degree requirements.

Fellowships provide a stipend of $15,000 per academic year and cover the cost of tuition and fees (12 credits per semester). Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Florida. Successful applicants will show:

* Clear promise of completing a graduate degree with a European concentration and a demonstrated need to acquire proficiency in a European language and
* A plan to pursue field research in Europe using the language of study.
* An excellent academic record as demonstrated by course grades, GRE scores, and strong recommendations

The next competition for Academic Year 2009-2010 FLAS awards will be announced in Fall 2008, with a deadline in Spring 2009.
