SUMMER TITLE VI FOREIGN LANGUAGE
AND AREA STUDIES FELLOWSHIPS
Summer fellowships provide students with an opportunity to undertake intensive European language study in any USDOE approved program. Intensive language study is defined by the USDOE as at least 140 hours of instruction for students at the beginning and intermediate levels, and 120 hours for advanced-level students. The summer FLAS award should provide each fellow with the equivalent of a full academic year’s worth of language instruction, and students must attend a program that is a minimum of six weeks in length.
Summer fellowships cover tuition at the host institution and provide a stipend of $2,500. Travel awards (covering the actual cost of travel only, up to $1000) may also be available. The statement of purpose accompanying the application for a summer fellowship should indicate why summer study is desired and how it will contribute to the candidate's program of study. Applicants must also provide specific information on the program they wish to attend, i.e. fees, contact hours, instructor qualifications, etc.
The next competition for Summer 2009 FLAS awards will be announced in Fall 2008, with a deadline in Spring 2009.
