His responsibilities included, among other things, staff announcing, production manager, music director, news reporter, news director, and program director. He has taught at Purdue University-Fort Wayne and University of Alabama-Birmingham. Already an established teacher and scholar, Dr. Wright joined the Florida faculty in 1982. He has taught in the areas of telecommunication research and regulation and mass communication law, news and audience research. The college and the university have recognized him for excellence in teaching five times. Much of his research involves investigation of legal questions using quantitative methodology, and his list of publications is lengthy and impressive. He is a co-author, with Les Smith and Dave Ostroff of Perspectives on Radio and Television, 4th ed., Laurence Erlbaum Associates, 1998. He further asserts his Avon Park High School diploma is more than a match for any graduate degrees claimed by his co-authors.
